Medical-grade silicone specifically (as opposed to general-purpose or low-grade silicone) meets the standards applied to medical devices and implants. It's the material of choice when the product is going to be in sustained contact with sensitive tissue.

Metal (Stainless Steel or Titanium)

Metal rings are rigid, fixed-diameter devices. What they offer:

The problems:

Porosity: TPE is porous, meaning bacteria and other material can harbor in the surface even after cleaning
Phthalates: Many cheap TPE formulations contain phthalate plasticizers. These leach with heat and friction and have endocrine-disrupting properties. This is why the FDA restricts phthalate use in children's toys and certain medical devices
Degradation: TPE breaks down over time, becomes sticky, discolors, and the material properties change in ways that can be harmful
No material disclosure: Most cheap sex shop rings don't list specific material composition

For a ring used infrequently, a budget TPE ring carries lower cumulative risk. For a ring used regularly in sustained contact with sensitive tissue, the material matters more.

There's no single universal "body-safe" certification that guarantees all the properties described above, but the following are meaningful:

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use any lubricant with silicone?

Water-based lube only with silicone rings. Silicone-based lubricants (like Überlube or Sliquid Silver) chemically interact with silicone, degrading the material over time. Oil-based lubricants can also damage silicone. Stick with water-based.

Is all silicone the same?

No. "Medical-grade silicone" meets specific purity and biocompatibility standards. General-purpose or decorative silicone doesn't necessarily meet these standards. When a manufacturer claims medical-grade, that specific designation matters.

Can I boil my BullRing to sanitize it?

Are metal rings more effective?
